The design process is a lot of fun and interesting to watch its progress and see how an original piece grows from a simple pencil sketch into a beautifully tangible product.
First, a design concept is first inspired. This inspiration can come from a plethora of sources - nature, architecture, an abstract work of art created by a favorite artist maybe - just to call out a few.
Next, the imagination recreates from this inspiration and delivers a brand new design to be brought to life. In this case, the Etta Jane London design was inspired by some amazing architecture I was fortunate to visually capture on a visit to London. I was struck by the definitive geometric forms on window and door frames on many of the modern and historical structures that dotted the city.
The design began as a simple pencil sketch which I then took into a CAD(Computer-aided design) software program to create a 3D model to be printed, molded, and cast in precious metals. It is humbly rewarding to hold the finished piece, see it shine, and to share with the world!
Silver and Rhodium are both precious metals. They are both silver in color, but each has their own unique look and qualities. Which is better is primarily a matter of aesthetics and personal preference. They each have a special place in the world of jewelry.
Rhodium is a silver-white metallic element that is part of the platinum family of metals. It is highly reflective and resistant to corrosion & tarnish. It is considered the rarest and most valuable precious metal in the world — ranking much higher than both gold and silver. In jewelry, rhodium is primarily used for plating other metals, including silver & brass.
Rhodium adds shine, luster, and durability to jewelry. It gives jewelry a bright, reflective quality and protects against scratches and tarnish. Rhodium is naturally nickel-free so any jewelry that is plated with rhodium is hypoallergenic.
Rhodium plating, like any other plating, can wear off over time depending on how often the piece is worn & how much contact it has with other surfaces. The plating on a ring that is worn every day and brushes many surfaces is likely wear off much faster than a pair of earrings for example.
One of the biggest benefits of rhodium is that it doesn’t tarnish. A rhodium-plated piece of jewelry can keep its shiny luster for years. Silver jewelry, on the other hand, can tarnish when exposed to air.
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver with 7.5% of another metal (typically copper) added. It is the copper in the sterling silver that makes it prone to tarnish, as copper reacts to moisture, sulfur, and other chemicals in the air. While pure silver does not tarnish, it is much too soft withstand jewelry wear. Tarnish can be easily wiped away with a soft polishing cloth. To minimize tarnish, clean your silver jewelry often and store it in sealed air tight bag when you are not wearing it.
Silver has a beautiful white-gray appearance. While not as reflective as rhodium, silver can be polished to a beautiful shine. Sterling silver is considered to be hypoallergenic as there is no nickel in its composition.
Side-by-side, rhodium typically looks shinier and slightly darker than sterling silver. Sterling silver has a whiter appearance and a slightly muted shine. We feature both of these beautiful metals in our Elevate collection.

Today, sterling silver is one of the most commonly used metals in high-quality jewelry and accessories. But not just any silver alloy is labeled as sterling — true
sterling silver is required to have a set amount of silver content. Sterling silver is made almost completely from pure silver. Precisely 92.5% of the alloy must be
silver, and the remaining 7.5 percent comes from other metals, most commonly copper. This minimal addition of another metal provides silver with strength and
durability without affecting its gorgeous, white-gray appearance.
An easy way to tell if a piece is sterling silver is to look for a quality stamp. According to international standards, all sterling silver should be marked with a quality or fineness stamp, which clearly states the precious metal content of the jewelry. Typically the piece will be stamped with 925 (indicating the 92.5% silver content) confirming it is in fact sterling silver.
No matter how or where you wear it, sterling silver jewelry is a timeless and seamless addition to your jewelry collection. Now that you know all about this attractive alloy go check out our silver earring collection!!

Like every other business on the planet, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a new set of challenges to our business. When the pandemic first hit, we felt paralyzed. As a start-up, finding followers and making sales was already a challenge. And now with everyone quarantined in their homes, it felt like a new piece of jewelry was the LAST thing anyone needed! That turned out to be not quite true, but we essentially stopped pushing for sales and started focusing more on spreading positivity and hope among our small circle of devoted followers. Our plan was to keep working behind the scenes to round out our inventory and patiently wait this thing out.
Even before the pandemic hit, getting our designs produced was extremely difficult and painfully slow. Cuff bracelets like ours, with intricate patterns and cut-outs, are extremely hard to make. Most casting houses aren't set up to handle such large pieces - much less at the level of detail we were looking for. We went through protyping with jewelers all over the world until we finally found a casting house that could produce our pieces at the quality and price we were looking for. Still, we were a small fish in a big pond and were always at the back of the line as our pieces moved through production. When the pandemic hit, everything came to screeching halt. Nothing moved for weeks and when work started again, it was extremely slow. Faced with the reality of a less than reliable supply chain, we decided it was time to switch gears.
New Directions & New Collections
It was early April. Mother's Day was coming up fast. We knew our customers were wanting to shop for gifts and we wanted to give them something fresh and new. With no time to wait for complicated production, we designed a mini-collection of hand crafted earrings. Our TOGETHER collection is series of fun dangle earrings built from interlocking sterling silver rings. They are cute, fun, and a symbol of friendship, love, and support. And they are made by us ❤. Below are a few of favorites from the collection.
We have also started releasing pieces from our new MIN/MOD collection. This is a collection of sterling silver earrings, pendants, and bracelets that make bold statements through simple lines and shapes. We are thrilled to partner with an exceptional South Dakota-based jeweler to produce this line. Here is a sample of a few of the pieces that are in the works for this line.
Our EMPOWER Collection is still in the works. We pared back the selection of cuffs that will release this year, but are adding a few sets of earrings to pair with specific styles. Here are few of the styles that are available in the shop.

New to working from home or feeling burnt out on the daily remote professional grind?
Quick tip. Speaking from experience, working daily from a home office and studio, one piece of advice I can share is GET DRESSED! Just because you are not going in to an office or public setting, doesn’t mean live in your favorite flannel pajamas, as tempting as it may be. Even the appeal of wearing exclusively Spandex ensembles can quickly wear off and take its toll on your overall emotional well-being.
You don’t have to wear designer gear, but what you see in the mirror matters. If you don’t look and feel ready to face the world, it can affect your productivity. And what about all the perfectly wonderful pieces hanging in your closet collecting dust? Making your appearance somewhat of a priority each day while working from home is definitely a boost most will find they may need. You might also find that your productivity and focus will grow as a result.
Getting dressed, really dressed, each day is the same mentality as making your bed in the morning – a small victory that sets the day up for success. Of course, accessories also make everything better too so don’t be afraid to add a little bling to your day as well😉.
Stay positive. Be well. Shine on! ✨💖
Do you work from home and find that it helps to get dressed, really dressed, to be more productive? Let us know in the comments!
How ETTA JANE Jewelry is Made
A new collection of earring designs has been completed. Then comes the manufacturing process, which can seem like an eternity!
All of our designs are created in house. From a carefully hand-drawn sketch, to the computer to develop the detailed 3D models on CAD software. The files and our specifications are then sent off to be ‘brought to life’.
The manufacturing process starts with 3D printing and lost-wax casting. The pieces are cast in metals that are made of 100% refined cast alloys, with 100% ethical-sourcing practices and fair-trade. And finally, a precise finishing and hand polishing process is performed.
We are beyond excited to receive the new earring design samples…TODAY! To hold a tangible result of our work and to see them shine. To try them on and share them with the world. The anticipation of new pieces is always so exciting!

I'll never forget the day my husband traded in my Audi A4 for a Honda Odyssey minivan!
What is something you SWORE you would never do but now do on the regular?
When I was in my early 30s I swore I would never try Botox. I remember shrieking in disgust, all high-and-mighty with my smooth skin, "Can you BELIEVE girls are injecting POISON into their foreheads to get rid of wrinkles?! I'm never doing that!" Fast forward ten years & I've got my injector on speed dial.
Inspired by historic London architecture, the London cuff is a modern take on vintage city style. Windows and columns wrap the wrist in edgy chic style. Perfect for dressing up or down.
Headed for a tropical vacation? Don't forget the jewelry! Try these pieces & look ultra chic while your kicking it by the water.
Ditch the Harsh Chemicals
Ready in 5 Minutes
There’s nothing easy about starting a new business. We started with a kernel of an idea, little cash, and an enormous learning curve. We are two moms who ditched our corporate careers to put our experience in design and marketing to work to create an amazing product that we would have a blast sharing with the world. After years of making other products look good, we wanted to create something so amazing it would shine on its own. We set out to break into one of the most competitive industries there is. Here are few things we learned during our first year out.
1 Focus is Everything
The details that you have to tend to when you are starting up are ENDLESS! When you only have two people to tackle product development, marketing, and business issues, focus is everything. It’s easy to blow the day working on all the fun things which may or may not be the most critical things.
One thing that has helped us stay focused is to dedicate a portion of every day to our most critical tasks. As a business, I mostly work on all things related to business and marketing while my partner manages all things product. No matter what I have on my list for the day, I try find three things I can do get us closer to our sales goals. Whether it is making progress on a campaign, reaching out to prospects, or getting our products listed in new places, I find three things I can get done on top of everything else on my list for the day.
